Theatre
DIAE introduces students to the specific vocabulary of live dramatic performance: plot, characterization, staging, improvisation, directing etc. Teaching artists help students improvise simple scenes, direct other students, or produce small theatre pieces. Past theatre offerings have included:
- Gayle Danley Slam Poetry.
- Tortilla Heaven: a bilingual performance with Jade Esteban Estrada.
- Hudson Vagabond Puppets' Oniroku, inspired by Japanese Bunraku
- Distant Voices, based on the diaries of a Japanese American citizen who was interned during World War II
- African-American storyteller TAHIRA
- Sunny Dooley, cultural representative of the Navaho
- Regina Ress sharing myths of the Mayan and Aztec and other Latin American folktales folktales
- Charlotte Blake Alston, presenting African and African-American stories
- David Gonzalez in As If the Past Were Listening
- Momma Sandi sharing African American storytelling
- Spoken Word poetry with Trapeta Mayson and The Twin Poets, Albert Mills and Nnamdi Chudwvocha
Most performances are scheduled at individual schools, thus avoiding bus costs for students to travel to other locations.
