Held at Austin D. Baltz Elementary, 1500 Spruce Avenue, Wilmington, Delaware

This workshop will focus on the aspects of connoisseur-ship and the intriguing and rich world of folk art and outsider artists. Learn to trust your own evaluation and interpretation of artists who may not fall into the main stream. Revel in your own creative abilities. Artist Eunice LaFate has had a presence in Delaware in many capacities, but in her heart Eunice celebrates her native Jamaican roots and she has created original works splashed with the colors and mood of her native home. Celebrating the people, landscapes, and culture, LaFate’s contemporary folk art paintings invite us to contemplate relationships. She graces each canvas with a kind of fluidity reminiscent of the rain soaked hills and of the grace and dignity of her people. Visit her website.

DIAE is doing something brand new and special in honor of changes for DIAE with a new executive director and a move from Cab Calloway to Baltz Elementary School. Come and enjoy a tour of the offices and meet with old friends, make new ones, reconnect with teaching artists, fellow teachers, colleagues, and DIAE’s Board of Directors. This is an opportunity to introduce Danny Peak who is not an unfamiliar face in the theatre world in Delaware, artistic director of Distant Voices and recently the director of The Vagina Monologues featured at the Delaware Theatre Company. You will also be invited to get a “sneak peak” at some of the current opportunities for professional artists to come into your school to perform for your students and to unlock their creative talents; a leg up with the new state mandated lesson format; and helpful hints in opportunities for grant writing aimed at integrated curriculum. Last but not least, there will be a reception following the workshop to honor DIAE’s new executive director, Danny Peak. There is no fee for this workshop. New and past participating teachers are invited to attend at no charge. Call for further details about the timing of the events and to register for this free opportunity to reconnect with DIAE.

DIAE AESTHETIC EDUCATION: MUSIC HISTORY
THE ROOTS OF ROCK ’N’ ROLL

University of Delaware, Wilmington Campus, Arsht Hall, 2700 Pennsylvania Avenue, Wilmington, Delaware

From a music history perspective, Rock ’n’ Roll represents a culmination of musical influences over multiple decades. Enough time has passed so that we can see Rock ’n’ Roll as a uniquely American melting pot of musical styles. The affluence and positive mood of the country during the “Fabulous Fifties” provided fertile ground for the development of this new genre of music. Baby Boomers from coast to coast rejoiced in the feel-good rhythms and uninhibited vocals to which they could easily relate. From Carl Perkins to Chuck Berry, from In the Mood to Great Balls of Fire, the Roots of Rock ’n’ Roll covers the early influences and hit-making artists who redefined popular music. Spanning the era from World War II to the early 60’s, this group captures the pre-Rock ’n’ Roll sounds of swing, rhythm & blues, country, gospel, and the signature early Rock ’n’ Roll chart toppers. The band journeys through 25 years of American popular music, recreating the styles which mixed and emerged as Rock ’n’ Roll. John Hutson on guitar and vocals, Monk Rowe on saxophone and piano, Tom McGrath on drums, and Bob Sherwood on bass, comprise this quartet sure to “Shake, Rattle & Roll.” There is a $50 registration fee.

Clyde Evans Jr., originally from Port of Spain, Trinidad, began dancing Hip-Hop in the early 80’s. Influenced by the popular Hip-Hop film, Beat Street, he learned Break dancing as a youth. Since that time Mr. Evans has developed an encyclopedic knowledge of all styles of Hip-Hop and their origins. He has danced with dancers such as the legendary Don Campbell, Mr. Wiggles, Forrest “Getemgump” Webb, and Rennie Harris. In 1998 he created Welcome to America, a piece based on his own experiences coming to the United States as a youth. Captivating audiences as a member of Puremovement, Rennie Harris’ dance company, Evans has performed and taught at major venues throughout the world. He co-developed and co-starred in the role of Mercutio in Rome and Jules, Harris’ dazzling spin-off of Romeo and Juliet. He has also appeared in feature films and dance videos. Evans has “something important to say,” said the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. There is a $25 registration fee as an afternoon-only session.

There is a $50 per day fee for each workshop.

These workshops focus on helping teachers do necessary research, formulate unit plans, write curriculum, and create assessment tools. Instruction and guided work sessions directed at grant writing to support an integrated curriculum will also be offered. Teachers will concentrate on specific skills pertaining to research, effective writing, and literacy within the arts themselves – an understanding of cultural artifacts and the ability to interpret and/or create them. These skills are tied to the former focus on specific repertory so they do not stand alone as workshops without attendance at one of the previous DIAE repertory-based workshops.
